Intrinsically Safe Position Sensors

 

 
For applications in hazardous locations, Intrinsically Safe systems provide a safe operating environment for personnel and equipment. Intrinsic Safety (IS) is based on the principle of restricting the electrical energy transmitted into a hazardous area, thereby ensuring that any sparks or heated surfaces that may occur as a result of electrical failures are insufficient to cause ignition. The threat of an explosion is eliminated.

Positek has obtained intrinsic safety approvals from the following agencies for applications in which the sensors are installed and used in conjunction with a galvanic barrier according to the requirements of the product certification.

Intrinsically Safe Sensor Barriers

Positek has designed a complete series of galvanic isolation amplifiers for use with its full line of intrinsically safe positon sensors, as well as other manufacturers' potentiometer-based sensors. These barriers provide a regulated and resistively limited +5V dc power supply required by Positek® IS sensors, and can be connected in three or five wire modes. The entire series has an input power supply range of 12 to 30 volts dc, making them suitable for a wide range of hazardous area applications. The output of these barriers is factory configured to either 0.5 to 9.5V or 4-20mA and has a bandwidth of 4.7kHz, making them ideal for servo control loops. The G005 Galvanic Isolation Amplifier has been designed specifically for use with Positek® CSA-approved G Series and H Series Intrinsically Safe position sensors, while the X005 model is designed for use with Positek® IECEx / ATEX-approved X, E, and M Series. The A005 is for use with Positek® ANZEx-approved A Series sensors.
